The Bohan’s Legacy

 Francis Bohan (1863-1933) was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States at age 12 in 1875. Due to a family emergency, he traveled from Ireland to the U.S. under the name of his older brother, Cormac Bohan. He was one of 19 people living with his Uncle Paul in Pittston, PA. Uncle Paul owned a grocery store above which he and his household lived.
In 1893, Uncle Paul sold part of his store to Francis, and he converted it into a bakery. Francis continued to live in the home above the bakery. In the 30 years he owned and operated the bakery, he trained several other men who established bakeries in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, PA. Francis was a well-established and well-respected businessman who was very involved in the community.

Francis had a great sense of humor and a penchant for writing poems. One of his poems was used for a newspaper advertisement:
         There are no flies in Bohan’s pies,
         Mrs. Bridigan said;
         But if you find flies in Bohan’s Pies,
         You can bet your life they are dead.

When Francis retired from the bakery business in 1923, he continued living above the store and started making whiskey from a recipe he brought from Ireland. Francis Bohan passed away on April 4, 1933.

Matt Mullock is a direct descendant of Cormac Bohan, Francis’s older brother.
